Austin A. Andersen joined the Office of Inspector General (OIG) in March 1999 as the Counsel to the Inspector General, and four months later became General Counsel to the Office, where he served as the principal legal advisor to the Inspector General. Mr. Andersen was promoted to Deputy Inspector General in 2000. In this position, he helped manage the staff of 108 employees, provide policy direction and set agency goals for the OIG.
Mr. Andersen joined the District government following a thirty-year career with the FBI. From 1988 to 1999, Mr. Andersen served as an attorney with the FBI, and in 1997 he became the Chief Division Counsel for the Washington, DC, Field Office. As Chief Division Counsel, Mr. Andersen supervised a staff of nine attorneys and paralegals and managed a full range of legal services for a field office of 1,500 employees. He also provided legal training for the FBI and other federal agencies, and conducted police training in South America and Europe, as well as at the International Law Enforcement Academy in Budapest, Hungary.
From 1988 to 1992, Mr. Andersen taught at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Prior to that, Mr. Andersen's experience centered on white collar crime investigations, both as a Special Agent and as Field Management. He supervised the FBI's White Collar Crime Program for the State of New Jersey, and later became the head of the Trenton Resident Agency.
Mr. Andersen graduated from Rutgers College in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and from the Cornell Law School in Ithaca, New York. He is a member of the District of Columbia and New Jersey bar associations.
